The Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, officially titled the UK`s withdrawal agreement from Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community. is a treaty signed on 24 January 2020 between the European Union (EU), Euratom and the United Kingdom (UK) [5] which sets the conditions for the UK`s withdrawal from the EU and Euratom. The text of the treaty was published on 17 October 2019[6] and is a renegotiated version of an agreement published six months earlier. The previous version of the withdrawal agreement was rejected three times by the House of Commons, leading Queen Elizabeth II to accept Theresa May`s resignation as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and appoint Boris Johnson as the new Prime Minister on 24 July 2019. If there is no agreement during this two-year period, Ireland could return to a form of hard border, but it is unlikely to happen. The decision, which means that similar clauses will not be included in the tax law when it is submitted to Parliament, was made following an agreement between the official and Michael Gove. „Whatever happens, it will be different on January 1, no matter what agreement we get – whether it`s like Australia, like Canada, there will be changes and businesses will have to make changes.“ Asked whether there are contingency plans for the House of Commons between Christmas and New Year, the Prime Minister`s spokesman said: „We believe that if we reach a free trade agreement, there will be parliamentary time to get it through Parliament. The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020 at midnight (23:00 GMT). A transitional period is now in effect until 31 December 2020. During this period, all EU laws and regulations continue to apply in the UK. For businesses and the public, virtually nothing will change. This will give everyone more time to prepare for the new agreements that the EU and the UK intend to conclude after 31 December 2020.

The new agreement stipulates that EU VAT legislation (VAT – a tax if you make purchases) will apply in Northern Ireland, but only to goods and not services. Overall, the deal would allow Britain to dissociate itself from the bloc from what was envisaged under the agreement, sealed a year ago by then-Prime Minister Theresa May. „There is no substantial progress, as there are so far fundamental differences: equal conditions of competition, governance and fisheries,“ he said at a press conference, after EU ministers were briefed by the EU`s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier. The controls themselves will move towards a customs border between Britain and the island of Ireland, with controls at „ports of entry“ in Northern Ireland.
